Math for elementary age students involves learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, telling time, fractions, graphing and lots of memorizing. Unfortunately, somewhere in the middle of all these symbols and numbers, many children come to the conclusion that they just hate math.

The secret to helping children learn to love math is to make it real by bringing math into your everyday life situations. And what is more real and everyday life than LEGO bricks! Let’s make math fun!

One way that you incorporate LEGO bricks into your math curriculum is by creating your own LEGO addition/subtraction/multiplication/division worksheets like the one above. You could use images of LEGO bricks instead of numbers or you could simply place actual LEGO bricks on a sheet of paper with symbols in between them. Fractions are often the most enjoyable math concept for for a teacher to teach and for a student to learn. There are many fantastic ways to teach fractions using food – cutting pizza or sandwiches, dividing up piles of M&M’s or Cheerios. How about using LEGO bricks for fractions? You could place several red bricks in a large pile of blue bricks and have your child figure out what fraction represents the red bricks. For another example, try stacking a tower of bricks and figure out what fraction of the bricks are a certain size. I’ve created a set of LEGO fractions worksheet for you to download like the one above.
