Exploring the World

In my life this week…

  • It has been thunderstorming all week long and our grass is super lush and green.
  • I realized how horrible I am at Mario Brothers on the Wii. They will never ever play a 3-player game with me again. I used to rock this game way back in the early Nintendo days. I think I was 10?
  • I made buffalo wings for my husband for the first time, which is hysterical because I had already started making them using this recipe and he google-chatted me saying, “could you try making buffalo wings sometime?” Great minds and all…

In our homeschool this week…

We started studying the 50 states, using Erica’s new Road Trip curriculum. Erica is so talented, I highly recommend anything she creates, including Expedition Earth.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

The end of year Classical Conversations celebration is today and yesterday we got together with our group to set up displays, practice presentations and have lunch. It was so nice to see everyone again after almost a month-long break.

My favorite thing this week was…

I can’t tell you yet, because it is a secret. But I can tell you it involves her, her, her, and her.

What’s working/not working for us…

Loving the language arts curriculum by Well Trained Mind. It has been really hard for us to find a grammar program that wasn’t too easy or too boring. We’ve found that we can really make both of these very relevant to what he is learning in other subjects.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

Why is it that my son writes far better in cursive than in print? I guess because there is more flow and less picking up/putting down the pencil.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Ever since we made the salt dough map of Ohio, my son is really into making things out of salt dough. So we made a map of the whole world and began tracking the European explorers. We used different colored pipe cleaners to trace the routes and created little boats with sails.

Here are the books we used in our studies:

  1. I love the salt-dough world map, and I think my own son will too! Also, I have big plans to grab WTM curriculum for my 1st grader, but I'm not sure I need to use the grammar book yet. Do you think the writing can stand alone?

    Have another awesome week! 🙂

  2. Your comment about Mario on the Wii made me LOL! I too used to play it and beat it, after playing for hours. Now I don't even know what is going on and my kids are saying things I don't understand, hee hee!

Thinking about jumping into Classical Conversations but a little hesitant.

Stopped by from the Hop :O)
