Did you know that migraines are considered a silent disorder? They wreck your entire body, from head to toe, while leaving your pain invisible to outsiders. 10 million Americans suffer from migraines. The number may be even higher, because a lot of people cannot differentiate between a regular headache and a migraine. I get both and can tell you 100% that the two are completely different. Migraines affect your entire body in a way that cannot be put into words.
I’ve suffered from migraines since I was a little girl. My dad and my brother both get them too. Last year, quite by accident, I discovered the cure for migraines. Seriously. I discovered the cure for migraines.
An apple. It is that simple. Eat an apple. Since last year I have asked 12 friends to test it out and the migraines of 10 out of the 12 disappeared within 20 minutes. I cannot explain it, but just know that based on my little test, it works. Natural medicine is always better than synthesized medicine and apples do have natural aspirin in them. It may be the pectin as well. All I know is that it works.
I guess I should back up a bit and admit that cure is probably not the word I should be using. Relieve is a better term, because technically migraines cannot be cured. Migraines are one of those diseases that often do not have an underlying cause and we are forced to treat the symptoms and not the cause. They will keep coming back and coming back. There are a host of prescription medicines that work for only a portion of sufferers. But hese are accompanied by a tremendous amount of side effects that are sometimes even worse than the migraine pain itself.
In addition to eating an apple, there are many natural things that a person can do to help relieve a migraine. Like eating dark chocolate!
I have yet to meet a single person who has found a 100% consistently effective cure for their own migraines. They have found ways to dull the pain or maybe even stop the pain all together after the migraine begins. This is what eating an apple does – it stops the migraine after it starts. Sometimes that is all we ask – a few hours of suffering instead of a few days, or at the very least, dull the pain so we can carry on with our day as a human being and not a walking zombie.
Other natural methods that may bring a bit of relief are: caffeine (tea, coffee, or pop), which decreases pressure by causing your blood vessels to dilate; water; a cold, dark, quiet room; alternating cold/hot compresses; and you’ll love this one – a small amount of natural sugar. Keep in mind that I said a SMALL amount of NATURAL sugar.
Do not annihilate an entire package of Oreos. Eat a single cookie, like the ones made by Udi’s. Udi’s foods are 100% gluten-free (I’ll get to the benefit of that in a minute) and they use dried cane syrup, which is far less refined and healthier than refined white sugar. Sugar can bring a slight surge of serotonin to your brain which can ease your pain. Also, one of the most common triggers of migraines is low blood sugar.
I just gave you healthy excuses to eat cookies.
Migraine triggers can include certain foods, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental allergies, but some sufferers have no triggers whatsoever, the migraines just appear at random, on their own time table. Studies have shown that many migraine sufferers have benefited from a decreased gluten intake. Gluten sensitivity can cause inflammation in the central nervous system, which in turn can bring on a migraine.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten is essentially the glue and it can devastate people with certain disorders and allergies. While a person may not have full-blown Celiac disease, he or she may have a gluten sensitivity that can bring on a number of conditions, including migraines. Udi’s sent me a number of foods to test out to see if decreasing my intake would help with migraines. I can say with certainty that it did help! All opinions are entirely my own, with a little help from my son and husband, who were thrilled to help me with this delicious science experiment!
