Sparking a love of learning can be difficult. Not all of us love math. Many people loath science. Others don’t see the relevance of learning about history. As parents and teachers, how can we help kids cultivate a love of learning? Sometimes all it takes is the right book, movie, or TV show. That little spark of interest can develop into a full-blown obsession and before you know it, you are considered a member of a “fandom”. Every chance I get, I incorporate our family history into my son’s lessons. I wholeheartedly believe that family history should be taught in every homeschool. Through the study of genealogy, you can develop and enhance skills such as researching, story-telling, cataloging and documenting, fact-checking, and more.
Just because a person is smart, does not mean they will end up with good grades. Along those lines of thinking, good homework grades do not automatically mean the student will get good test scores. One of the many reasons a lot of parents choose to homeschool is because they don’t want their children equating intelligence or mastery with good grades. Intelligent kids are often the ones who end up with terrible overall class grades, simply because they are not good test takers. This is especially true with timed tests.
