A Doctor Who Bookcase in 7 Easy Steps

I am all for DIY and especially all for Doctor Who and other sci-fi shows. One day, I saw this really cool Doctor Who bookshelf that is only sold in the UK and I immediately remarked, “I can make that!”  And I did!

Doctor Who TARDIS Bookcase

With a little imagination, you can turn any bookcase into a dream bookcase for your child.  Now this bookcase is a dream for my son, because it houses all of his Narnia, Doctor Who, LEGO, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Harry Potter books.  A geekcase.

This was quite easy to make. We already had this a small 3-shelf and simply painted it a brilliant TARDIS blue color. (You can buy these bookcases in major stores for about $20-30.)

Next, I cut a piece of poster board foam the same width as the bookcase and painted it blue.  Yep, that top piece with the words on it is not wood, it is foam.

I then used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out the words that appear on the top of the Doctor’s TARDIS. I used vinyl, which stuck to the foam board very well. I do think I put them on a bit crooked, however.  You could also use alphabet stickers.

Since the foam was really lightweight, I used my hot glue gun to attach the foam to the stop of the bookcase.

That was it. 7 easy steps.

  1. Assemble the shelf.
  2. Paint the shelf.
  3. Cut the foam board.
  4. Paint the foam board.
  5. Cut out the words.
  6. Attach the words to the foam.
  7. Attach the foam board to the top of the bookcase.
